Both optical and digital zoom lenses allow close-ups of a distant subject; they just achieve it by different methods. Optical zoom magnifies the picture before the shot is taken, whilst the digital zoom artificially magnifies the image by enlarging the pixel area, however this can result in a loss of resolution. The resolution is down to the number of pixels that make up a photo, high resolution cameras shoot and print highly detailed photographs and if you will be editing photos and want to keep the quality and sharpness then opt for a high number of mega-pixels. If all your photos will be online or sent via email, then a low number of mega-pixels can produce good enough quality images and are cheaper to buy.

Ensure the camera has an effective LCD, the larger the screen the easier it is to compose and review images before shooting. Some digital cameras now come without an optical viewfinder, whilst the LCD screen is great for letting you view an image as you take it, look at photos already taken, and play back videos, some people prefer a viewfinder as it sets a frame for the photo. Anti-glare screens are best for buyers who plan on shooting a lot of photos outdoors, and if you will be traversing through rough terrain it's advised you opt for a scratch resistant screen.

When shopping, either in the high street or online, it pays to check what comes with the camera. The same model may be more expensive in a particular store, but the difference in price might be worth paying if they are providing extras that other stores may not, such as a camera bag, a big enough memory card to hold a sufficient number of photos, and rechargeable batteries and charger.

Check out how long the battery will last, and ensure it is rechargeable. The last thing you want to do is spend money on batteries every time they expire, rechargeable batteries can be used again and again and are much more environmentally friendly into the bargain. Your camera should come with a battery charger that can be plugged into the mains for convenience. Buy canon cameras online and get a better price than any high street store can offer.
