I am going to buy a Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens this week, does it matter if it is made in the USA as opposed to Japan

Recent Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF lenses are made in China. I own one myself. This lens is a bit plasticky but it's well made and it provides great image quality.
Henry is talking about 'grey imports'. This has nothing to do with where a lens was made. Grey imports are a bit cheaper, and for this discount you give up the right to a factory warranty.
Regarding the comments that there is no difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.8 versions... that's nonsense. The f/1.4 version is obviously half a stop faster and, more importantly, it's built to be used wide open. The 50mm f/1.8 version needs to be stopped down to about f/4 for good image quality. I love the 50mm f/1.4 and I use it all the time. The AF is fast and accurate, the image quality is fantastic, and the shallow depth of field can be used to great effect to isolate your subject.
If you don't mind manual focus lenses, you could consider the 50mm f/1.2 AIS. And if you also don't mind insane prices, you could even consider the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 Noct.
