With so many companies competing in this market trying outdo each other with more features for less money each year, it can be so confusing buying a digital camera with so many options on the market and such a big price difference.

Are you going to be taking close up shots or further in the distance?
Do you need one that will handle some rough treatment?
Are you going to use it in the water or snow?
If you are my recommendation is the Panasonic Lumix FT2 as it designed to waterproof to 10 meters, drop proof 2 meters and frost proof down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. The other brand of camera is the Olympus mju tough 8010 camera with features on par with Panasonic.
For most people are compact digital is the best option as they light and easy to carry, where SLRs can be heavy and hard to carry and more suited to the professional or enthusiast photographer.
Most compact cameras come with a digital and optical zoom. Optical zoom uses the lens bring the object you are photographing closer in without reducing quality. Digital zoom uses electronics and software at the expense of quality. An optical zoom of 3 to 5 is more than enough. If you are planning long distance shots then will want think about camera with a zoom of 12 or more.

Most digital cameras come with multiple settings for taking different types photos in different environment. While some will also have an automatic setting so the camera will choose the best settings. Making it easier for the beginner to get great shots every time, as you just point and click.
As digital camera electronics rapidly improve offering more features for less money can make getting a great photo easier. So when you selected your new camera get out there experiment with different features.
