Is it possible to capture a star trail photograph with an eos 500d kit lens? Or do I need another one?

But the wider the lens, the more sky will be in your picture.

Click on an image that looks like what you're after.
On the right hand side of the picture page (scroll down) there is a panel marked "Additional information", where it says what camera was used. Click on "More properties". You can now see the settings the photographer used.
You may have to try a couple of images as some people turn this display off, but it's a great way of learning
